![]() Telling a story that expresses all of these details and characteristics would take more than the twenty-one words in this first stanza, and would not paint as vivid of a picture. The second sentence builds off the information given in the first, stating, “High maintenance means you’re a gluttonous queen, narcissistic and mean.” This presents the metaphor of a “gluttonous queen,” implying that she always desires more than she has, and feels entitled to everything she wants. It presents a relationship between two people, establishes that the relationship is not healthy, and shows that the singer (the boyfriend) still desires the other person despite knowing they are ultimately just going to cause him more pain. This first sentence of the song, though it is only eleven words long, establishes a large magnitude of information. The first statement in the song is a plea, “Love me cancerously, like a salt sore soaked in the sea.” The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) defines a salt sore as “a sore caused by exposure to salt water.” Due to the salinity of seawater, if one were to soak a salt sore in the sea, they would just be introducing more and more of what caused the problem in the first place, thus exasperating the problem even further. The first stanza of “Love Me Dead” uses similies, metaphors to quickly establish the inner character of this woman, and the relationship between the her and the singer, who, it can be assumed, acts as this woman’s boyfriend. I purport that the symbolism, comparisons, and adjectives used in the song, as well as the order they are placed in make for a more dramatic image that takes much less time to establish. Though the description of specific events could give a stronger understanding of why this man feels the way he does, setting up and telling a story in a credible and believable way tends to take time. In terms of content, one may wonder why the songwriter chose to employ comparisons to describe this woman and this relationship as opposed to recounting specific instances of her acting in a way that conveys the same image. The lyrics, specifically in the first verse, are full to bursting with similes, metaphors, and vibrant imagery, each instance of which acts as an individual puzzle piece that eventually compiles into a very clear image. Though she takes advantage of him and treats him like dirt, she knows just what to say and do to drive him wild and keep him within her grasp. “Love Me Dead” by band Ludo is, at its very core, a song about a man torn between loving and hating the woman who he is dating. Fill my soul with vomit and ask me for a piece of gum. High maintenance means you’re a gluttonous queen, narcissistic and mean. Those who know better will be disappointed." A writer for Alternative Addiction preferred the "darker themed songs ("Love Me Dead", "Lake Pontchartrain")" over the "really bright, energetic and fun ("Please", "Such As It Ends")" but gave credit to the latter for having a likable charm to them, concluding that the record "brings the band's intelligent and quirky rock to the mainstream, and that's never a bad thing.Analyzed Lyrics: Love me cancerously, like a salt sore soaked in the sea. Still, you will not want to turn your back on this one, for a few reasons." AllMusic writer William Ruhlmann felt that the band's lyricism was considerably "dumbed down" from their previous effort, noting how "Topeka" squanders its beginning by having a lack of direction and continuous repetition of said beginning, and highlighting "Go-Getter Greg" for having "enough flair" to come from their first album, concluding that "Those who have never heard Ludo may think You're Awful, I Love You is an efficient work of pop/rock. Ludo's major label debut hints that they probably have a great album or two in them, if they can overcome their inconsistency. ![]() He concluded that, " You're Awful, I Love You is a solid album of straight-ahead rockers, enhanced by some creepy songwriting and fantastic hooks. IGN 's Chad Grischow praised lead singer Andrew Volpe's vocals for being "compelling without becoming theatrical" and the mixture of "poppy hooks and macabre lyrics" throughout the track listing but felt that most of them "fall short with bland verses ("Drunken Lament")" and "a little too much pop gloss ("Mutiny Below")".
